I assure everyone out there who follows this, this will not be the only Attack of the 80s. The 80s was a special time that saw the explosive rise of music videos fueled by the ever-growing love of rap and hip hop as well as the powerhouse for all things music titled MTV. If you weren’t on MTV, you might as well been a nobody in the music industry (this is all changed now since being on MTV means you appeal to the current half-whit drama llama generation filling their endlessly retarded need for reality tv drama.)
Basically to keep things more or less inline with the ideas of the Art of Music Videos, all things about the 80s music videos will keep inline with the classical nature of them. These are the videos that defined a generation of both music, artists and how to spend less than $5000 to make a music video. So without further delay, welcome to the 80s… again.
Maestro Fresh Wes – Drop the Needle
This is full of an odd combination of Win. First off it has the essential elements to the music video of the 80s: Bad hair, static un moving complete with black-up rapper, Green Screen effects complete with old clip footage and some funky 80s beats. Hell, they even have the slide dance in some shots. Also the ‘Drop the needle’ sample is no doubt a sample of ‘Whoop ‘dere it is’. Win all around. If you remember Bangs music video (AoMV-WTF FAIL) you get an idea of where he got the divine inspiration for his production. Odd fact, but Maestro Fresh Wes is a Canadian rapper and probably paved the way for the modern day rap heroes like Choclaire and Sean Paul. Eh.
M.A.R.S. – Pump up the Volume
This is sort of the other type of 80s music video you come across; the unrelated visual to music. Like I mean it’s all awesome and shit to be seeing this Space Programme visual footage and stuff, but when you think of it, it has nothing at all to do with ‘Pumping up the volume’. Unless they’re being ironic since space has no sound and no volume… or that rockets are loud… I don’t know.
J.J. Fad – Supersonic
Oh the 80s… This shit is crazy. Wait, are they wearing tights as pants? Once again my theory of everything really awful comes from the 80s is a step closer to being made into a law of pop culture life. That aside, there’s so much just happening in this that it causes a lot of spinning, and not just figuratively. But then again, those were some fine-looking honeys, bad hair and super jackets aside.
EPMD – You Gots to Chill
Another classic video using the basics. Problem is, this video is so chill it’s frozen. Even the rappers are stiff and cold. But damn, this video is so chill, my apartment got like cold, no wait, the heat just turned off. Brrr.
Earlier this week the Angry Zen Master has a friend of a friend of a friend (or something like that) that’s a producer and got some elements together to make some killer music: Wu Tang Clan + Budos Band = Wudos Band. They’ve got an 8 track mashup out and ready for downloading on the AZM Posting.
Also while you’re there, also check out what short films he’s dug up for his Short Film Friday.
