This week is sort of going to be in memorandum to someone who I knew and they really, really enjoyed puppets. Also it’s their birthday. So this week’s theme will be all about Puppets who star in Music videos. Strange I know, but they sort of do play an interesting role in music videos and culture for kids growing up in the early 80s and 90s.
Mr. Oizo – Flat Beat
This is exactly the kind of shit I wanna pull when I get my own office and hot secretary. That little puppet is a mother fucking OG Office pimp. He don’t give a shit about anything except running business how he wants to run it. All and all a memorable music video even if the song is in a way ‘lacking’, but that’s the nature of how Mr Oizo rolls.
Supergrass – Pumping on your Stereo
By product of a combination of a lot of energy and creativity. I don’t think another music video has been done this way and that just proves how awesome it is. Even more so it’s still being played and used to this day. Hammer & Tongs did the directive work for it and this is more or less their peak music video for a while. Supergrass however sort of peaked out around this time too.
The Greyboy Allstars – Still Waiting
Nothing too complicated about this one. Muppets-esque puppets dancing and putting on a show meanwhile all this crazy stuff just happens to be happening on the dance floor (just like in non-muppet/puppet life). Not sure who directed this or who did the puppetry, but they did a really good job and it shows. The Greyboy Allstars, keep making great music… where ever you are!
Jay-Z ft. Rob N. Banks – Jockin’ Jay-Z
Looks like J-zizzle got puppetized. This isn’t official, but it might as well be. I mean that’s a damn good puppet Jay-Z that someone made. Can’t speak about the Rob N. Banks one but if that Jay-Z puppet was going to be doing shows with the real Jay-Z, then I think I have to go and get myself a ticket to that concert.
Diva and the Divanettes – Silly little worries
Yeah this is is basically what most people think about when you talk about puppets. This is exactly the kind of thing I was exposed to growing up in the late 80s and early 90s. This is mostly due to the muppets breaking out from their more adult orientation and working the kids angle. It also helps that Sesame St. was advancing puppet technology to great heights (no not really).
Concerned Childrens advertisers – Don’t you put it in your mouth
I swear every kid in Canada has seen this thing and future generations will still be talking about this and reposting it for the millionth time on whatever future iteration of the internet/ youtube happens to exist. I, I am just doing my part to help kids not put it their mouth or stuff it in your face. This goes double for those future night walker ladies.
Other notable puppets to look up:

- Dave Chappelle Muppets
