So I was a little (probably a lot) harsh on some videos last week and it’s probably best if I give a good example why something sucked by comparing it to something that didn’t suck. Everything else is just kind of random for this week.
Beastie Boys – No Sleep Til Brooklyn
Last week’s edition you may have noticed I harped on the ass-backward ness of using an ass load of A-list movie and TV stars to participate in the Beastie Boys new music video / mini movie (which I still have yet / refuse to see). So for the ignorant masses who have no idea where the idea to do the video came from here’s one of the sources. The other being their music video for (You gotta) Fight for your right (to Party!). These were simple good music videos and didn’t need all this forced effort. This is still a superior video to what they did for Make Some Noise.
Justice – DVNO
Speaking of 80s throwbacks, I really wish I had found this one sooner. I’m absolutely in love with homage they pay to 80s flashy logos. This is an example of being creative in reproducing things that are old. They didn’t force the lyrics onto replica logos, but found the most natural way to portray them in conjunction with the lyrics of the song and at a good pace that nothing lingers too long. Only after listening to the song for a year did I notice the song was lacking in any lyrical diversity. And the creative team behind this used that to maximum effect and you get this great video for Justice.
Sir Mix-A-Lot – Baby Got Back
This is a great classic in hip-hop music of the 80s. It’s one of the songs a lot of people took to heart and had as their anthem. It’s true, there are guys out there who like big butts and for a lot of women Sir Mix-a-Lots words were something that encouraged them to be happy and satisfied with their bodies. It was empowering for both sexes and smashed that ‘thin is awesome’ complex. Hell this song has such a wide-spread legacy the Playstation 3 game ‘Fat Princess’ uses the song in the closing Credits. Shrek used it as well, but that sucked.
Radiohead – Just
Haven’t showcased any Radiohead and well, I just wanted to. Why not?
