So finally back on track this week now. Apologies for the delay of things. So to atone for it, got more classic stuff from Much Music’s Big Shiny Tunes 3 album as I sort of do this reversal thing or retro thing. Either way, getting the choice cuts and presenting them. And as I missed last week, this one’s going to do a bit of making up work. So hold on folks and lets rock out into summer.
Big Wreck – That Song
I really shouldn’t have forgotten about That Song, but I did and I look back on it and feel bad for the neglect. It’s a good song, with a good tune and not too hard heavy, but also not too sissy to shove big sound in your face. Anyways video kind of starts out as a typical band playing while filmed, but then swings into this weird thing where this dude is being followed by the song. Some neat visuals, but still overall odd and a bit disconnected. FUN FACT: The driving scene was filmed mostly on Queen Street East in downtown Toronto.
Third Eye Blind – How’s it Going to be
I kind of expected this video to be much different from what it is. I don’t recall ever running into it while surfing on the tube, but after it was released, every teen / highschool dramatic movie trailer just had to include this song some way some how. But it’s got that kind of romantic element to that makes for a video that’s not half bad. It does regress back into that band playing while being filmed, but this time it fits the narration.
Semisonic – Closing Time
While again this video has the band playing, like the one above, it’s tied into the narration very well and works with the video rather than against it or in a way that makes it out-of-place. To go further, they’ve got a very nice artistic filming style that does one hell of a job to make this video stand out from the rest. It’s got two sides of the same story passing back and forth from each other, guy is always like 3 seconds too late to meet his girl, they keep passing each other, they got that cyclist who moves the narration along without breaking things up. It’s quite the creative video and not something I would have expected to see a decade ago. And I wish it was something I had seen.
Barenaked Ladies – One Week
You could not make a music video in the late 90s and early 2000 without having your band playing. I mean I guess it’s better than Rappers who just kind of stood and shuffled, but I mean it can get boring. And Barenaked Ladies made it boring in this. There are some high productions to this video but over all it really doesn’t make all that much sense why. I mean it sort looks okay visually, but I’m just left confused as there’s not much happening between the song and the visuals. And I hate that a lot in music videos, makes my brain hurt being pulled in two different directions.
Foo Fighters – My Hero
‘BUT THE BAND IS PLAYING IN THIS ONE TOO!’
Damn right they are, and isn’t a little more interesting than normal? I mean the building is on fire, this dude is running in and out saving anything and everything, and the band keeps moving about totally oblivious to the scene. Interestingly this video was directed by Dave Grohl himself and I give him kudos for doing a solid job on it.
Placebo – Pure Morning
One of them artsy videos that doesn’t need shots of the band playing (which wasn’t really Placebo’s style anyways). Yeah I still can’t really tell what’s going on in the video, even to this day and with all my wisdom thus gained, it’s still just odd and un-explained. The shots and design of the video is interesting, but that’s aboot it. The story is just weird and leave me unsettling. FUN FACT: That’s not a woman who jumps, it’s the bands lead singer.
Garbage – Push It
I don’t think I’m really going to bother with this. Garbage is quite bi-polar in regards to the variety of music videos they do and this is no exception to that. Take what you will from it.
Sloan – Money City Maniacs
Bit of a drab video to be honest. Very much in the 70s style of videos. Visually interesting for a bit, then gets boring and repetitive. Sad to point it out, but it’s a lot of lazy directing and creativity. Best to file it under ‘things not to do’ for music videos.
