There’s a bit of a conflict on this Hate Monday. I mean I have to say I hate about 99.5% of all tumblr. sites I come across and on a whole I find the idea of tumblr. repulsive and irritating. FYI for those who don’t know what tumblr. is:
Tumblr, sometimes styled as tumblr., is a microblogging platform that allows users to post text, images, videos, links, quotes and audio to their tumblelog, a short-form blog. Users can follow other users, or choose to make their tumblelog private. The service emphasizes ease of use.
It’s a combo of WordPress Blogging, Flickr and Twitter. Mix all that and you end up with the shit sandwich that is tumblr. For the most part a majority of the tumblr. websites I come across are filled with re-posted shit, a shitty iphone hipstermatic photo and some text. Congrats, you’re a blog wizard now. Make sure to add a hash tag of no importance so you can probably trend it to all 6 people who passively follow your tumblr. account.
The #1 reason why tumblr. hold so much power on the internet? Probably because it’s being fueled by Apple and Hipsters. I mean one follows the other, but the line is blurred in the tumblr. case. Don’t believe me? Just go check the main tumblr. page and click the ’30 Reasons to Love Tumblr’. And then look at this, or something like this, even this, perhaps this?
Case in point being that a majority of the tumblr. universe does not inspire creativity or originality, very much in the same way that twitter does not do much more than create endless hashtagging and Bieber followers. Don’t get me wrong, or confused, WordPress is no god of creativity. It is after all a system to display content and has grown beyond it’s blogging ambitions. It does have more than it’s fair share of crappy blogs and useless posts, however there are now more tumblr. accounts than WordPress accounts, so if you do a bit of math you see which has the potential to cause more damage.
However, on the flips side when people know how to use tumblr., they do a decent enough job and the minimalistic display can be an advantage. Team Teamworks site is powered by tumblr. and it works well enough for his purposes and possibly using wordpress could be overkill due to his need to just post songs, updates and the occasional poster. And it doesn’t stop there as another artist has shown her ability to wrangle tumblr. into usefulness and be presentable for her needs.
I can’t be overly critical about tumblr. since I’ve not seen the interface for it, but at the same time I feel it’s simplicity and mirroring of three other tools out there doesn’t exactly slot itself some usefulness. It seems more apt to helping to create more social networking garbage and reduce the effectiveness as a creative outlet. I can’t totally hate on twitter because I’ve seen it in working action, however I can hate on the dumbass community that’s abusing and misusing this tool given to them.
